Cloudburst and Floods in Himachal and Uttarakhand: Himalayan Disaster
Introduction: Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, these two beautiful hill states of India, have been facing the fury of nature in the last few years which has disrupted the life of their people.
Disasters like cloudburst, sudden floods and landslides are now becoming the destiny of this place. There are many reasons behind these tragedies, some of which are natural and some are our own mistakes. In this article, these reasons and their serious consequences will be elaborated upon. We want to bring about a new future, along with this we will think about the challenges of the future.
1. Cloudburst and destructive flow of chopped wood
Cloudburst is a weather phenomenon in which in a very short time, i.e. in a few minutes, a huge quantity of wood is produced. Within minutes or hours, a particular small area receives more rain than it would normally receive in several days or weeks. When such torrential rain falls on mountains, a huge and rapid deluge of water rushes down the slopes. Along with this water, heaps of already cut wood, which are often kept on river banks or slopes to be brought down from the mountains, also join the flow of water. These wood bundles, which contain tree trunks and large branches, form a huge and uncontrolled mass of trees. They flow with great force. Their speed and weight cause massive damage as they destroy everything in their path. Be it strong walls of houses, strong bridges, or roads—these bundles of wood, like a powerful tornado, destroy everything. It is a heartbreaking scene where a person sees his entire life's savings and dreams flowing away in front of his eyes. In this type of disaster, not only property is destroyed, but many lives are also lost, due to which the lives of the affected families are ruined forever.
2. Indiscriminate deforestation and increasing danger of floods
One of the biggest and man-made causes of this tragedy is indiscriminate deforestation. Trees, especially those growing on mountains, act as a natural shield. Their roots hold the soil firmly, which prevents rainwater from eroding the soil and reduces the risk of landslides. These trees also absorb rainwater, which helps in retaining water. The flow of rainwater is slow and it does not reach the rivers quickly. When forests are cut down on a large scale, the soil becomes loose and erodes easily. Rainwater flows straight down quickly without any obstruction,
Due to which the risk of sudden floods increases manifold. It is not just about the illegal timber mafia, but trees are being cut on a large scale in the name of so-called "development". Forests are being destroyed indiscriminately to build wide roads, large dams and to establish new settlements. The environmental impacts of these projects are not properly assessed or are ignored. The result is that we are getting ever increasing incidents of floods and landslides, which are a direct result of our negligence.
3. Encroachment on river banks: shopping malls, car parking and construction work Another serious problem is encroachment in river catchment areas. Our rivers, which have been flowing on their natural paths for centuries and have a specific floodplain for themselves, Shopping malls, car parking and big construction works are being done haphazardly and without any proper planning on the sides of the land. The land mafia and builders are flouting the rules in greed for a few bucks, and often in collusion with government officials, and building these illegal buildings. When there is heavy rainfall and the rivers swell, they tend to seek out their old, extended paths as per their natural tendency. In such a situation, all these water bodies coming in their way get washed away. Constructions collapse like a pack of cards in a moment. These buildings and structures obstruct the natural flow of water, causing the water level to rise even faster and flooding of the surrounding areas. This is not just a loss of life and property, but it also causes a great loss of our lives. There is also an unpardonable tampering with the natural environment. Rivers are not just a source of water; they are a whole complex ecosystem that we have sacrificed to our greed. Construction on the river banks not only increases the risk of floods, but also harms the ecology and health of the river. Water quality is also negatively affected.
4. Government rescue operations and future challenges
Whenever such a terrible disaster occurs, the local residents are the worst affected. The whole of Himachal and Uttarakhand face severe floods. Roads are broken, power and communication services are disrupted, and people's lives are completely disrupted. In such difficult times, the government helps the victims by setting up rescue camps. National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Army and other voluntary organizations work together. These teams evacuate people to safer places, rescue those stranded, and provide them with food, water, medicines and temporary accommodation. This is a commendable and necessary effort, which is vital to save lives and provide relief to people in times of disaster.
But, the real and more important question is whether we can break this vicious cycle of disasters. Will we be able to break it? Will we be limited to only helping in times of disaster, or will we work on long-term policies and plans that can prevent such tragedies in future?
The biggest and most important question is this: Will we be able to do anything against the environmental mafia?
It is not just about illegal timber thieves or sand mafia, but it includes all those who flout rules and build illegally on river banks, those who cut down forests and make mountains bare, and those who violate environmental laws. Unless these people are caught, they will be punished. Unless powerful and influential people and groups are reined in, this tragedy will continue in places like Himachal and Uttarakhand.
We have to understand that messing with nature always has bad consequences. Development is necessary, But that should be done while maintaining the balance of the environment. We have to adopt the principles of Sustainable Development, in which protection of the environment is given priority. This includes implementing strict environmental laws, crackdown on illegal mining and felling. These include preventing floods, removing encroachments in river areas, and planting trees on a large scale.
If we do not wake up today, and take concrete action on these serious issues, future generations will never forgive us. It is time that we all come together to save our mountains, rivers and Raise your voice to save forests and put pressure on the government to make environmental protection its top priority. We have to understand that our existence depends on the balance of nature, and maintaining this balance is the collective responsibility of all of us. There is responsibility.
